The ultra-budget IEM market moves fast, but few product lines hold as iconic a spot in audiophile history as the Moondrop (水月雨) CHU series. From the bright, analytical nature of the original CHU to the fun, bass-boosted dynamic profile of the CHU II, Moondrop set the benchmark for high-performance sound right under $30.
Now, with the release of the VGP GOLD awarded Moondrop CHU III, Moondrop refines its ultra-budget formula once again, delivering a smoother, richer tuning and updated hardware improvements.

Refined Tuning & Acoustic Engineering
The CHU III retains the 10mm Aluminum-Magnesium (Al-Mg) alloy dome composite diaphragm driver and N52 neodymium magnet setup, but updates the acoustic structure with a newly integrated CNC brass nozzle.
Early community reviews note a noticeable shift from the CHU II: the CHU III lowers harsh high-frequency peaks in favor of a full-bodied, warmer sound. Mid-bass slam is impactive, while male vocals and acoustic instruments sound thick and fatigue-free.
Redesigned Metal Shell Architecture
While keeping its durable cast zinc-alloy housing, the CHU III features a redesigned concave faceplate with micro-venting and a single-piece wide nozzle. This eliminates the removable nozzle ring from the previous generation to provide a cleaner airflow and stable acoustic seal.
Smooth, All-Day Listening
If you found previous budget IEMs a bit too sibilant or bright during long work or gaming sessions, the CHU III scales back the upper-treble intensity. It’s built for non-fatiguing, warm, and musical everyday listening.
Recommended Gear PairingsWhile the CHU III is easy to drive at 16Ω / 118dB sensitivity, choosing the right source and accessories will help you get the absolute best synergy out of its warmer sound signature:
DAPs & Dongle DACs:
Neutral-to-Bright Portable DACs: Because the CHU III leans towards a warm, mid-bass-focused profile, pairing it with clean, analytical sounding gears brings out crisp detail and opens up female vocals and instrument separation without introducing harshness.
Portable Tube/Warm Amps: If you double down on its warm signature for hip-hop, lo-fi, or EDM, pairing it with a portable hybrid amplifier adds extra punch and rich harmonic depth.
